Facts About Working As A CNA
If you have ever thought you may want to have a career in the medical care industry, then you no doubt know about doctors, nurses, psychologists and the like. If you are truly gun-ho on becoming a medical professional, then you understand you need to start your way on the bottom, and work your way up.
That means you will have to become a licensed CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant. Now I'm sure if you have done your due diligence you already know the requirements for becoming a CNA, the licensing fees, the lessons you need to attend, the rules you need to follow etc. There is a seemingly endless amount of information out there, and it can be complicated sometimes to find what you want or need.
However, in the pages upon pages of details you have scoured, you probably did not find the most pertinent information on being a CNA.. Which is.. What exactly are the functions of the CNA?
For starters, CNA's are the lowest members of the medical profession. This does NOT suggest they are the least important! Conversely, during your time as a CNA you will provide much needed assistants to the doctors and nurses above you, to ensure that everything may run smoothly. If not as a result of the hard work of CNAs around the country, many nursing homes, and many other assisted living facilities, would not be possible, and many many elderly people would be with no recourse, and no one to care for them and ensure they were alright. CNAs are also found many times in our schools as acting nurses, aiding our children with their ailments.
The actual responsibilities of a CNA will differ greatly from state to state, but there is an overall general outline you can expect to follow. You can assume that during your time as a CNA you will be responsible for the following things:
Day to Day Patient Care:
Your first and most important duty as a CNA, is the daily care of patients under your care. This will include, but may not be limited to, these specific tasks; feeding the patient, preparing menus for the patient, having the patient dressed in the morning and undressed at night, changing the bedpan for the patient, helping the patient in bathing, or preparing to go out on a trip, preparing exercise programs, executing exercise programs, taking the vital signs of the patient, and even measuring out and giving patients their prescription drugs (this last one will vary greatly on the state you are in and the requirements you needed to be a CNA to begin with. )
Record Keeping:
The second most important responsibility you will have as a CNA is keeping proper records and files. You absolutely must stick to the guidelines provided to you during your training, so that the doctor, other nurses, and other CNAs can effectively care for the patient once your shift has ended and it is time for you to go home.
